Cumberworth / Graveyard restoration

The Great Graveyard Reclamation

Local volunteers have been restoring St Nicholas graveyard since April 2024, clearing years of brambles and uncovering forgotten graves.

Saturday mornings

The group, started by Sheila, meets most Saturdays from 10am to 12 noon. Volunteers also help in their own time. Some look after individual graves; others help with the wider clearance and maintenance.

If you’d like to lend a hand, come along on a Saturday morning or get in touch to find out more.

Research & remembrance

Alongside the practical work, volunteers are researching the people buried here and uncovering local stories, with research support from HD8 History.

The group has been working with Cumberworth Village Association to commemorate First and Second World War veterans buried in the churchyard. Family memorials also remember people who are buried elsewhere, including soldiers buried in France.

Adopt a Grave

Looking after an individual grave helps keep the restoration work going. You can help in your own time, and we can help you find a grave to care for.

Local support

The work has also had support from local businesses such as Myers and from Cumberworth Community Association (CCA).

Ongoing maintenance

The Kirklees Payback team visits every few weeks, weather permitting. Health and safety requirements limit the equipment they can use, and they cannot work on individual graves. Local volunteers continue to look after those.
